Sunkisses is a brand of multilingual and multicultural products and services that raise the self-esteem of young people by celebrating one another’s cultural differences and similarities through education, creative arts and entertainment. Our mission is to raise the self-esteem of young people by teaching them how to love, validate, and accept themselves; while seeing their uniqueness celebrated & reflected in one other’s cultural differences and similarities. Starla Lewis created Sunkisses in 1982 after her three daughters questioned why they didn’t see images of themselves reflected in books and television. After seeing the hurt and confusion in her daughters eyes she was inspired to create a series of diverse images which allowed them to see themselves and understand how they were connected to the human family. Aisha, Khaleedah and Sherehe had continuous demands for more pictures from their mother and they encouraged her to create a coloring book. Additional demands came once friends and classmates saw the Sunkisses, and Starla realized the importance of children being able to see images of themselves and others. The purpose of Sunkisses is to encourage children to know that they are brilliant, powerful, limitless and love. |
